¿Qué es la celulitis?
Se conoce como celulitis o más comúnmente como piel de naranja, a los depósitos irregulares de grasa que se acumulan bajo la piel y forman protuberancias y hoyuelos en caderas, glúteos, muslos y abdomen principalmente. La celulitis puede hacer que la piel se vea arrugada y con aspecto grumoso, lo que coloquialmente le da el nombre de piel de naranja. También puede causar un estancamiento de la microcirculación y los líquidos.
La celulitis es una afección cutánea común e inofensiva, más frecuente en las mujeres. No puede considerarse una enfermedad, sino una alteración estética de la superficie de la piel, ya que esta grasa es mucho más visible que la que se acumula en sus capas más internas.
¿Qué tipos de celulitis hay?
La celulitis puede clasificarse según criterios como su gravedad, la zona a la que afecta o su aspecto. En función de este, puede ser:
- Dura o compacta: este tipo de celulitis afecta sobre todo a mujeres jóvenes, también pudiendo ser delgadas e incluso deportistas. La piel es dura al tacto, firme y los nódulos son visibles sin necesidad de pellizcar con los dedos. Se encuentra principalmente en la cara externa de los muslos, acumulaciones que se conocen popularmente como cartucheras y los glúteos, que adquieren apariencia rugosa, con hoyuelos y a menudo presentan estrías. Puede llegar a provocar dolor al presionar la piel.
- Blanda o flácida: más común en mujeres de 30 a 40 años, afecta a personas sedentarias o que hayan variado de peso bruscamente. Se localiza principalmente en los muslos, el abdomen, los brazos, la espalda y los glúteos. Es un tejido esponjoso que se mueve y de consistencia flácida y gelatinosa, que otorga la apariencia conocida como piel de naranja. No suele ser dolorosa.
- Edematosa: más frecuente en mujeres de 20 a 40 años, es la menos común de las tres. Se localiza sobre todo en la parte inferior de las piernas, aunque también puede afectar a los muslos y rodillas. Se suele hablar de pierna con forma de “columna”. Consecuencia de la retención de líquidos, su consistencia es viscosa o pastosa con nudos y puede ser dolorosa al tacto. A veces, molesta de manera espontánea y puede llegar a ser incapacitante. En este caso, podría requerir tratamiento médico.
¿Cómo eliminar la celulitis?
Una vez se ha desarrollado, la celulitis es un problema muy difícil de combatir. Existen varias opciones de tratamiento, aunque los resultados son variables y, a menudo, no duraderos, que pueden ayudar a eliminar la celulitis:
- Medidas higiénicodietéticas: se deben adoptar hábitos saludables como realizar ejercicio físico de manera regular, dormir siete u ocho horas diarias y seguir una dieta equilibrada. En caso de sobrepeso u obesidad, el médico puede aconsejar una dieta de adelgazamiento.

- Tratamientos quirúrgicos: una de las opciones clásicas para combatir la celulitis es la liposucción aspiración de la grasa subcutánea mediante cánulas, pero no siempre es eficaz. En la actualidad, existe también la opción de la lipoescultura ultrasónica, que se lleva a cabo con láseres de lipólisis y que consigue eliminar la grasa de manera más controlada, si los volúmenes son pequeños.
- Tratamientos basados en nuevas tecnologías: como los ultrasonidos, la radiofrecuencia o la ultracavitación, que, mediante ondas ultrasónicas, generan microburbujas que succionan la grasa.
